Horst Stein creates a wonderfully superbly atmospheric performance, that is matched matched by the sound of the recording itself, of Wagner’s last work. Siegfried Jerusalem and Leonie Rysanek bring much poignancy to their respective roles. But it is Karl Ridderbusch who makes the performance unforgettable. It is still spoken about in Vienna to this day. As a bonus, Siegfried Jerusalem, Jeannine Altmeyer and Hildegard Behrens are heard in highlights of Die Walküre from Bayreuth in 1984.
