Molinari-Pradelli leads a very “French” performance of the opera and one that has more of the music than was subsequently to be heard. But the performances by Gedda and Freni absolutely send one into orbit. Both are youthful, passionate and vocally inhabit roles that could have been written for them. Not to be missed! Mirella Freni, is also heard in the bonus, singing a recital of songs by Mozart, Rossini, Verdi and Rachmaninoff. This is a fitting tribute to a little know facet of her art.
