This is one of those performances that has entered the ephemeral realm of operatic legend. Cornell MacNeil exhibits a new and fascinating side to his art that hitherto was not even hinted. His German is superb, he also sings with finesse and grandeur. It makes one wonder why he did not examine more roles in this repertoire. Leonie Rysanek once again gives us her trademark, thrilling and hysterical Senta. But on this occasion, she is also vocally immaculate. Giorgio Tozzi again offers a beautifully nuanced performance as Daland. And Ticho Parly sings with sweet and full tone in a role that is next to impossible for the poor tenor. Berislav Klobučar was highly regarded in his day as a conductor of Wagner great works, and on this occasion amply displays why.
